Question: Will you keep in effect President Clinton's executive order that eliminated sexual orientation as a reason for denying federal employment?
Submitted from John of Washington, D.C. through Web White & Blue 2000 (10/04/00)

Answer from Al Gore:

Putting An End To Discrimination
Let me be clear, John. I believe our nation is strong, not in spite of its diversity, but because of it.

I strongly supported that executive order, and I will keep it in effect.

In fact, I have been fighting to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to extend employment protections to gays and lesbians throughout America's workforce. There are still 39 states in which it is entirely legal to fire someone simply because of their sexual orientation. That is just wrong, and as president, I will continue to fight to end such discrimination.
