Question: Why should we believe drug prohibition will eliminate drug use, since alcohol prohibition just led to increased crime? Have you ever used illegal drugs, and if so, how do you reconcile that with whatever punishments for drug use you now endorse?
Submitted from Gene of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania through MSNBC.com (10/11/00)
Answer from Howard Phillips:
States And Communities Have The Right To Prohibit Harmful Drugs
I have never used illegal drugs.
I believe that states and communities have the right to prohibit access to drugs which can be harmful not only to the users but to the population as a whole. I also favor severe penalties for people who are found guilty of drunk driving.
Drugs are in a different order of magnitude than alcohol because they are instantly harmful. They instantly cloud judgment. Communities have a right to defend themselves against people who distribute drugs and place others at risk in consequence of such distribution.
