Question: What is your position on medical research on human fetal tissue for diabetes and other diseases? What about human cloning for production of healthy organs for transplant?
Submitted from Ellis of Dallas, Texas through washingtonpost.com (10/16/00)

Answer from Patrick J. Buchanan:

Respect For Life Must Be Protected
I support efforts to discover treatments and cures for all diseases that afflict the human race.

However, I believe that God is the author of every human life. The use of aborted children for spare parts is an abomination before the Creator and I will not support it. The recent experimentation with cloning raises many ethical questions. I do not support scientists playing God and attempting to create a human life for exploitation. I believe the creation of life is sacred and any activity that devalues life erodes respect for its sanctity. If we begin looking at any human, unborn or scientifically manufactured, as nothing more than a store for organ shopping, we significantly change the way future generations will view and value life. It is a dangerous road that may offer some benefits but also has many pitfalls that can lead to the unethical treatment of people.
