DEBATES ENDED, GOVERNOR BUSH ENTERS HOMESTRETCH WITH POSITIVE AGENDA

Voters saw a different philosophy of government last night...

In three debates over the past three weeks, Governor Bush made clear the difference between his compassionate conservative philosophy that places its trust in the people and Vice President Gore's big government approach that places its faith in political appointees and Washington bureaucrats.

What became abundantly clear to America's voters again last night is that Governor Bush is a different kind of Republican, who will change the tone in Washington and put an end to the bitter partisanship that has marred the public policy debates during the Clinton-Gore years. Governor Bush's specific views on critical issues like patients rights, prescription drug coverage, health care coverage, and education accountability dominated the first 30 minutes of last night's debate.

What also became clear again is that if Al Gore is elected president, the era of big government being over -- is over. In contrast, Governor Bush believes in a limited but activist Federal government that effectively and efficiently accomplishes critical priorities.

Vice President Gore's denial that he proposes the largest increase in Federal spending in years is not convincing, especially in light of a study released yesterday by the non partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CFRB) (on whose board sits former Clinton Office of Management Budget Director Leon Panetta.) According to the CFRB study, Gore's spending proposals would "produce the largest spending increases since LBJ and the Great Society." The study also confirmed that under the Gore plan, "it is reasonable to conclude that 50 million people could fail to qualify" for tax relief.

Look for the Bush campaign to capitalize on their momentum in the next few days with the "'W' stands for Women" tour and the "Barnstorm for Reform" tour, consisting of 29 Republican Governors who will barnstorm the country on behalf of Governor Bush!
