Question: How important is credibility in the Oval Office? Have you lied to the public since beginning your campaign? Have you ever broken a federal law? Would you swear an oath to never lie to us as president?
Submitted from Judith of Cornish, Maine through PBS Online (10/24/00)

Answer from Harry Browne:

Are George Bush And Al Gore Really Honest?
Judith, the President's credibility is as important as you and all the other Americans think it is.

It's been said "You can't fool all the people all the time, but you can fool enough of them often enough to get elected." Are you going to be fooled... again?

Do you believe what Al Gore and George Bush are telling you -- that they can provide free prescription drugs to the elderly, increased spending on education, increased military pay, that they can add another 50,000 police officers, add thousands of additional teachers, spend more on inner cities and in our rural communities, and also cut your taxes?

Ask Americans on Main Street: "Do you believe the federal government is too big, too intrusive, and too expensive?" Nine in ten will answer "Yes." That's why Bill Clinton announced that the era of big government is over. It's why both Al Gore and George Bush say they want to streamline government, making it smaller and more responsive to ordinary Americans. And yet, the federal budget recently passed -- $2 trillion a year -- is the biggest annual budget ever passed. Someone's lying to you.

Americans do want a much smaller, less intrusive, less expensive federal government. But what special interest program did either George Bush or Al Gore propose to eliminate or substantially cut? Answer: not a single one. Think that over for a few minutes, Judith. Are you getting basic honesty from these other candidates?

Here's some honesty: No one can make the federal government smaller, more responsive, less intrusive, and less expensive without actually cutting programs. I am the only candidate to tell that simple truth. Hence, the Great Libertarian Offer: Will you give up your favorite federal program to free yourself and your children forever from the income tax and the 15% social security tax?

George Bush and Al Gore are basically dishonest, taking your money for their special interest groups, pet projects, and campaigns. This year, these fabulously wealthy politicians are taking $67 million each from ordinary taxpayers to finance their campaigns -- and that's just for the general election. Millions more of your money was spent in the primary. The Democratic Party and the Republican Party spent another $12 million of your money each on their opulent conventions entertaining the politically rich and powerful. (And, Judith, that wasn't you, was it?) Pat Buchanan -- the so-called "reformer" -- took $12.5 million from ordinary taxpayers like you to squander on his campaign. That's not reform, its business as usual in Washington D.C.

But, I don't believe in using the IRS to take money from ordinary taxpayers, then giving it away to the politically rich and powerful.

Here's some honesty: I qualified for almost $1 million dollars in federal matching funds. But I rejected that money because I don't believe you should be forced to support me. Every dime of money I'm spending to spread the Libertarian message is voluntarily contributed, because the alternative used by Al Gore and George Bush seems to me, well... like plain theft.

I'm the only candidate honest enough to admit that you know how to run your life better than I do. I want to set you free to run your life as you see fit not as Al Gore or George Bush think it should be run. If elected, I won't need to lie because I'm not interested in taking your money to spend on the politically powerful that want me to take money from you for them. How do you know that? Well, because unlike Al Gore or George Bush or Pat Buchanan, I refused to participate in confiscating your money and spending it on my campaign. There you have it -- almost a million reasons why I'm more honest than them.
