Restoring A Strong National Defense
The defense of the United States has been weakened by the policies of Democrats and Republicans alike.
Beginning in fiscal year 1986 both establishment parties participated in an ongoing draw down of real dollars available for national defense. During the tenure of Dick Cheney as Secretary of Defense, spending was cut by 25 percent. Mr. Cheney participated in a long term reduction, which reduced defense expenditures from 6 percent of gross national product to 3 percent of gross national product.
The Republicans speak today of their desire to strengthen our national defense. However, it is important to note that under the Constitution, it is the Congress which is responsible for oversight of the armed forces and for the appropriations process. The Republicans have had majority in both houses of Congress since 1994 and have failed in their duty to properly strengthen our military, even as Bill Clinton in the White House has diligently worked, with no objection from Vice-President Gore, to reduce the overall military strength of the country.
Talk is cheap at campaign time, but there is one party which has consistently supported the strengthening of the U.S. military without diverting resources to the objectives of other countries, (like through through the United Nations or NATO.) If you desire seeing a real restoration of U.S. military strength devoted to defending the approximate vital interests of the United States if America, there's one political party for which you can in good conscience invest your vote, the Constitution Party.
