Interactive Media For Children

Markle Foundation/Thirteen/WNET
"New York: Learning Adventures in Citizenship"
Date Initiated: December 1998

Learning Adventures in Citizenship was a curriculum-based Internet project that used the Web to teach children about their responsibility in the community and ability to act on it.

Created to tie-in with Ric Burns's "New York," a five-part, PBS documentary chronicling the history of New York City, this interactive experience was specifically aimed at using New York as a platform to increase middle and secondary school children's awareness of, and interest in, their own communities.

Participants had access to a Multimedia Knowledge Base containing the vast archive of photographs, film, interviews, and primary texts assembled for the TV series, plus much original material. In addition, inquiry-based projects were included to stimulate students to conduct research and examine their own communities.
