Oxford University: Programme on Comparative Media Law and Policy
Date Initiated: June 1999
This initiative was a continuation of Markle's support of Oxford University's Programme on Comparative Media Law and Policy. The programme was created in September 1996 to address the need for detailed study and analysis of the various policy and regulation strategies that nation-states follow in response to media globalization, and the implications of these strategies for democracy and human rights. The Programme assisted the discipline to strengthen its monitoring of national and international approaches and policies, and facilitated regional, national and local debate on the relationships among information flow, regulation, culture and governance.
Among those that took part in the programme was Christian Sandvig. Christian Sandvig joined the Centre as a Markle Foundation Information Policy Fellow after earning his Communications PhD at Stanford University. His research focused on communication technology and public policy. He is currently Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
