WorldLink / Internews Network
A New Model For Interactive Global News
Date Initiated: July 1999

In this project Markle assisted Internews Network, Inc., in developing a license application and strategy for an innovative, interactive 24-hour live channel dedicated to quality, international affairs programming on two major Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) systems.

The opportunity to compete for such a channel was the result of a recent FCC ruling that the DBS operators had to give away four percent of their channel capacity to public-interest programming. The channel aimed to use digital, interactive technology to inform and engage individuals in new ways.

The purpose for The Internews channel was to create a model for a converged news medium that combines the strengths of video media and interactive media by being presented to both television and computer users.
