The Law, Technology, and Public Policy Clinic, Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley
Date Initiated: November 2000
Beginning in November 2000, the Markle Foundation pledged a three year commitment of support to The Law, Technology, and Public Policy Clinic at the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. The Markle Foundation's partnership with the Boalt Hall School of Law enabled students, working under close faculty supervision, to represent clients before courts, legislatures, administrative agencies, and international tribunals. The Boalt Hall clinic also promoted the interests of underrepresented groups in society. In addition, research was undertaken to create new models for public-interest legal practice related to the Internet and new technologies, still a relatively new field today. The Markle Foundation, noting the success of this partnership, has since sought out proposals from other law schools and related academic institutions to create similar alliances.
