Interactive Media For Children

PBS
Date Initiated: February 2001

Markle and PBS collaborated on the development of a long-term, multiple media strategy that informed not only the growth and direction of PBS's children's programs, but will also drive the development of children's media for future generations.

As long-time leaders in quality children's programming, both on-air and online, PBS took early advantage of the opportunities digital convergence offers in order to serve children and their families. Markle supported PBS's commitment to developing a substantial, educationally-oriented definition of success, directed more inclusively at children pre-K through twelve.

One Mission Many Screens - A PBS/Markle Foundation Study on Distinctive Roles for Children's Public Service Media In the Digital Age
David Kleeman, executive director of the American Center for Children and Media. This study was conducted for the Public Broadcasting Service and supported by the Markle Foundation.
American youth are growing up with near-ubiquitous media at home, at school, and with increasing wireless services everywhere in between. At the same time, children's media companies are merging into larger global companies. Given these conditions, how can we ensure that the public media serves the interests of children? "One Mission, Many Screens" outlines six fundamental principles to guide and govern public service media for children.
