Amitai Etzioni

Professor, George Washington University
Member, Markle Task Force on National Security in the Information Age

Amitai Etzioni is the first University Professor at George Washington University. From 1987 to 1989, he was the Thomas Henry Carroll Ford Foundation Professor at the Harvard Business School. He served as Senior Advisor to the White House from 1979 to 1980. For 20 years, Etzioni served as Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, serving part of that time as Chairman of the department. Etzioni founded and was the first President of the International Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics. He is the Editor of The Responsive Community: Rights and Responsibilities, a Communitarian Quarterly. 

Amitai Etzioni has been a Member of the Markle Task Force since its inception in 2002.  He has contributed to every report published by the Task Force, including: Protecting America’s Freedom in the Information Age in 2002, Creating a Trusted Network for Homeland Security in 2003, Implementing a Trusted Information Sharing Environment in 2006, Mobilizing Information to Prevent Terrorism in 2006, and Nation at Risk in 2009.
