James B. Steinberg is an internationally recognized expert in public affairs and foreign policy. Prior to serving as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, he was Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. Steinberg currently serves as Dean of Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and University Professor of Social Science, International Affairs and Law.

Steinberg was a member of the Markle Task Force on National Security in the Information Age from its inception in 2002, until his appointment as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State in 2009.
