Tom A. Bernstein and James I. Cash, Jr. Named to Markle Foundation Board of Directors
President of Chelsea Piers Management, Inc. and Harvard Professor bring business
management and information technology expertise to Markle Board
New York, NY -- Zoë Baird, President of the Markle Foundation, announced
today that Tom A. Bernstein, President of Chelsea Piers Management, Inc., and
James I. Cash, Jr., Professor of Business Administration at Harvard's Graduate
School of Business, have been named to the foundation's Board of Directors. The
announcement comes following a vote of the current Board of Directors that took
place at a recent meeting held in New York City. Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Cash
were elected to a three-year term and their appointments are effective immediately.
"Tom Bernstein and Jim Cash bring quite varied, yet extremely complimentary
sets of experiences to the Markle Board of Directors," said Ms. Baird. "Tom's
work as President of Chelsea Piers Management has helped transform the New York
City waterfront to a major attraction for both tourists and residents of the city,"
she said. "In addition, he has been deeply committed over the years to building
the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights. His expertise in building partnerships and
coalitions will be of great value to Markle."
"Jim has extensive experience and background in both the academic and business
world," said Ms. Baird. "He has been involved with information technology for a
lmost three decades and has conducted extensive research on the role of information
systems technology in large corporations. I am extremely pleased to have both of them
as board members."
As President of Chelsea Piers Management, Inc., Mr. Bernstein oversees a 30-acre,
$100 million waterfront sports village located along Manhattan's Hudson River.
From 1983 to 1999, Mr. Bernstein was one of the two principals of Silver Screen
Management, Inc. Silver Screen partnerships financed films produced by The Walt
Disney Company and Home Box Office, Inc.
Mr. Bernstein is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School, where he was
an editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Mr. Bernstein is President of the Board of Directors of The Lawyers Committee
for Human Rights; Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the WNYC Foundation;
and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
James I. Cash, Jr. is the James E. Robison Professor of Business Administration
at Harvard's Graduate School of Business and Chairman of Harvard Business School
Publishing. He has taught in all the major programs, served as Chairman of the MBA
Program and has published five books on information systems management and
technology and numerous articles.
Professor Cash earned a Bachelor of Science from Texas Christian University; a
Master of Science and PhD. in Philosophy of Management Information Systems from
Purdue University.
Professor Cash serves on the boards of directors of several other organizations,
including Microsoft, The Chubb Corporation, General Electric, Knight-Ridder Inc.
and Scientific Atlanta.
