Markle Foundation Names G. G. Michelson to Board of Directors

NEW YORK, NY—G. G. Michelson, a distinguished New York business and community leader, has been named to the Markle Board of Directors, Zoë Baird, president of the Markle Foundation, announced today. Mrs. Michelson is a former member of the Markle Foundation Board of Directors and served two terms as Chairman. She was elected for a three-year term and her appointment is effective immediately.

“G.G. Michelson has been a trusted advisor to the leaders of some of the most innovative and successful institutions in the country,” said Ms. Baird. “During her previous tenure on Markle’s Board, G.G. helped reshape the Foundation’s mission and played a significant role in a number of its achievements. The Markle Foundation will, once again, benefit from her leadership and experience. I am extremely pleased to welcome G.G. back to our Board.”

Mrs. Michelson retired as Senior Vice President for External Affairs for R.H. Macy & Co., Inc. in 1992 after serving the Company for nearly 50 years. She served the Company as Senior Advisor and Member of the Board until 1994, when Macy’s merged with Federated Department Stores, Inc..

In addition to Macy’s, Mrs. Michelson has served on a number of corporate boards including the General Electric Company, The Quaker Oats Company, The Stanley Works, The Chubb Corporation and The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. She was President of the Board of Overseers of TIAA-CREF, a Public Governor of the American Stock Exchange and Deputy Chairman of the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

Mrs. Michelson is Chairman of The Helena Rubinstein Foundation, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Columbia University, a member of the Columbia Law School Board of Visitors and previously served on the Board of Visitors of the Columbia Business School.

Mrs. Michelson previously served on the Markle Board of Directors from 1973 until 1988 and again from 1989 until 1997. She served as Chairman from 1986 until 1988 and again from 1993 until 1995.

Mrs. Michelson is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and recipient of an LL.B. from Columbia Law School. In addition, she holds a number of honorary degrees including an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Marymount Manhattan College and an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Policy Analysis from the RAND Graduate School.
